District in eastern Suriname, bordered to the east by the Marowijne and Litani rivers (which follow the frontier with French Guiana), to the south by Brazil and the Sierra de Tumucumaque, and to the north by the Atlantic; area 45,980 sq km/17,753 sq mi; population (1996) 12,600. The capital is Albina.
