Marquette County

Administrative district in the northwest of Michigan's Upper Peninsula; area 4,716 sq km/1,821 sq mi, population (1990) 71,000. Marquette County borders on Lake Superior, and is drained by the Dead and Michigamme rivers and tributaries of the Escanaba River. the county seat is at Marquette.

Marquette is the largest county in Michigan, and is rich in minerals. It is the site of the Marquette Iron Range, marble quarries, and gold mines. Lumbering is also a widespread economic activity in this densely forested county. Some field crops and livestock are raised. The city of Marquette has diverse manufacturing industries and port facilities for shipping iron ore. There are many lakes in the county, with numerous camping, hunting, and fishing resorts.
