Marriage, The

Unfinished opera by Mussorgsky (libretto taken from Gogol's comedy), composed 1864. It was never performed in Mussorgsky's lifetime, but was produced with piano accompaniment in St Petersburg on 1 April 1909, and with orchestra in Petrograd on 26 October 1917 with Mussorgsky's Sorotchintsy Fair. Podkolesin hires a marriage broker in pursuit of Agafya.

Comic opera by Martinů (libretto by composer, after Gogol); composed 1952, first performed NBC TV, New York, on 7 February 1953.
