Mars Observer

NASA space probe launched in 1992 to orbit Mars and survey the planet, its atmosphere, and the polar caps over two years. The probe was also scheduled to communicate information from the robot vehicles delivered by Russia's Mars 94 mission. The US$980 million project miscarried, however, when the probe stopped transmitting in August 1993 after a suspected explosion in its orbital insertion engine.
