Marsalis, Wynton

Marsalis, Wynton (1961– )

US trumpet player and composer. He has recorded both classical and jazz music. He was a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers 1980–82 and also played with Miles Davis before forming his own quintet. At one time this included his brother Branford Marsalis on saxophone. He has received several Grammy Awards and the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for Music.

He studied at the Juilliard School of Music, New York, New York. In 1987 he co-founded Jazz at Lincoln Center, which sponsors jazz performances and educational programmes.
