Marshall

City and administrative headquarters of Harrison County, northeast Texas, USA, 228 km/142 mi east of Dallas and across the border from Shreveport, Louisiana; population (1990) 23,700. It is centre of an agricultural and oil-producing region; industries include food processing, cotton, clothing, building materials, vehicle parts, and chemicals. The city is the home of Wiley College (1873) and East Texas Baptist University (1912).

Marshall was incorporated as a city in 1841; during the American Civil War it served briefly as the administrative headquarters of the exiled Confederate government of Missouri.
