Marshfield| Town in Plymouth County, southeastern Massachusetts; population (2000 est) 4,200. Marshfield lies on the Atlantic coast, 24 km/15 mi east of Brockton. A summer resort, it is also a residential suburb, and cultivates cranberries. It is was settled by Europeans in 1632 and incorporated in 1640. |

| Founded in around 1868, Marshfield became an important railway junction, and was extensively rebuilt following a catastrophic fire in 1887. The city is set in a dairy and poultry-farming area. Cheese, beer, shoes, mobile homes, and wood products are among its manufactures. The Marshfield Medical Research Foundation and St Joseph's Hospital have established its reputation as a medical centre, and a campus of the University of Wisconsin (founded 1964) is situated here. |
