Marshfield

Town in Plymouth County, southeastern Massachusetts; population (2000 est) 4,200. Marshfield lies on the Atlantic coast, 24 km/15 mi east of Brockton. A summer resort, it is also a residential suburb, and cultivates cranberries. It is was settled by Europeans in 1632 and incorporated in 1640.

Marshfield encompasses a number of resort villages, including Ocean Bluff, Brant Rock, and Green Harbor. The US politician and orator Daniel Webster lived, died, and is buried in the town.

City in Marathon and Wood counties, central Wisconsin, 53 km/33 mi southwest of Wausau; population (1990) 19,300.

Founded in around 1868, Marshfield became an important railway junction, and was extensively rebuilt following a catastrophic fire in 1887. The city is set in a dairy and poultry-farming area. Cheese, beer, shoes, mobile homes, and wood products are among its manufactures. The Marshfield Medical Research Foundation and St Joseph's Hospital have established its reputation as a medical centre, and a campus of the University of Wisconsin (founded 1964) is situated here.
