Marsyas

In Greek mythology, a Phrygian satyr who found the flute discarded by the goddess Athena and challenged Apollo to a musical contest judged by the Muses. On losing, he was flayed alive, his blood sourcing the River Marsyas.

Athena had invented the flute but rejected the instrument as playing it distorted her face. The story was described in Ovid's Metamorphoses.
