Martha, oder Der Markt von Richmond

Comic opera by Flotow (libretto by F W Riese, pseudonym ‘W Friedrich’, based on a ballet-pantomime, Lady Henriette, ou La Servante de Greenwich, by J H V de Saint-Georges, produced in Paris on 21 February 1844, with music by F Burgmüller and Deldevez), and produced in Vienna at the Kärntnertortheater on 25 November 1847. Lady Harriet and maid Nancy disguise themselves and meet two young farmers, Plumkett and Lyonel, at a country fair. They fall in love, and complications of differing social class are resolved when Lyonel turns out to be of noble blood.
