Marcian (396–457)

Eastern Roman emperor 450–457. He was a general who married Pulcheria, sister of Theodosius II; he became emperor on Theodosius' death. He convened the Council of Chalcedon (the fourth Ecumenical Council of the Christian Church) in 451 and refused to pay tribute to Attila the Hun.
