Martigues

French fishing town in the département of Bouches-du-Rhône; population (1990) 43,000. Martigues is situated on the Etang de Berre lagoon at its outlet to the Mediterranean, 29 km/18 mi northwest of Marseille. There are salt, cement, and vegetable-oil industries.
