Martin, Mary

Martin, Mary (Virginia) (1913–1990)

US actor. She made her stage debut in 1938 in Leave It to Me, in which she sang the show-stopping ‘My Heart Belongs to Daddy’. She was known for her down-to-earth portrayals and starred in several major stage successes, most notably South Pacific (1949), in which, as Nellie Forbush, she sang ‘I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair’. Other successes included Peter Pan (1954) and The Sound of Music (1959). She also featured in several films. Martin was born in Weatherford, Texas.

Martin, Mary (1907–1969)

English painter and sculptor. From rug design and abstract painting, she turned to construction in 1951. In 1969 she created the Wall Construction for Stirling University and won first prize (with Richard Hamilton) in the John Moores Liverpool exhibition. She often collaborated with her husband, the sculptor Kenneth Martin, who was strongly influenced by constructivism.

Martin was born in Folkestone, and trained at Goldsmiths College and the Royal College of Art.
