Martin, Theodore (1816–1909)

Scottish author. With W E Aytoun he wrote The Bon Gaultier Ballads 1845. In 1866 he was invited to write the official Life of the Prince Consort, which he produced in five volumes 1875–80. He also translated the Odes of Horace, Dante's La vita nuova, Schiller, and Goethe's Faust. KCB 1880.

He was born in Edinburgh, the son of a solicitor. Educated at Edinburgh University, he set up as a lawyer and parliamentary agent, and soon acquired a large and profitable practice. He became rector of St Andrews 1881.
