Bucer, Martin (1491–1551)

German Protestant reformer who was instrumental in introducing his own brand of Lutheranism to the city of Strasbourg 1523–24. He gained an international reputation second only to that of Luther himself: a symptom of the high regard in which he was held was the invitation of the English government early in Edward VI's minority for him to bring about reform in England. He accepted, becoming professor of divinity at Cambridge University, England, from 1549. In his theology he tried to reconcile the views of his fellow Protestants Martin Luther and Ulrich Zwingli with the significance of the eucharist.
