Martin-Harvey, John (1863–1944)

English actor. He appeared with Henry Irving's company at the Lyceum in London 1882–96, and established his position as a leading actor and manager with The Only Way in 1899, adapted from Charles Dickens's A Tale of Two Cities. During his career he managed the Lyceum, the Prince of Wales's, the Court, the Royalty, and the Apollo theatres, and Covent Garden.

Among his most striking performances was his Pelléas to Mrs Patrick Campbell's Mélisande in Maurice Maeterlink's play in 1898, and his impressive co-production with Max Reinhardt of the Greek tragedy Oedipus Rex in 1912.
