Martinez, Mel(quíades) (1946– )| US Republican politician, secretary of housing and urban development 2001–03 and US senator for Florida from 2005. As housing secretary, he sought to stimulate affordable housing production and develop faith-based partnerships to assist the homeless, elderly, and disabled, and those living with HIV and AIDS. The first Cuban-American to serve in the US Senate, from 2007 he became head of the Republican Party's National Committee. |
| Born in Cuba, he fled to the USA at the age of 15, in 1962, after the communist takeover, as part of a Catholic humanitarian effort that brought 14,000 children to the USA. He became a successful lawyer and active in community and faith-based initiatives in Florida. |
