    0.02 sec.

Martinez, Mel(quíades) (1946– )

US Republican politician, secretary of housing and urban development 2001–03 and US senator for Florida from 2005. As housing secretary, he sought to stimulate affordable housing production and develop faith-based partnerships to assist the homeless, elderly, and disabled, and those living with HIV and AIDS. The first Cuban-American to serve in the US Senate, from 2007 he became head of the Republican Party's National Committee.

Born in Cuba, he fled to the USA at the age of 15, in 1962, after the communist takeover, as part of a Catholic humanitarian effort that brought 14,000 children to the USA. He became a successful lawyer and active in community and faith-based initiatives in Florida.
