Martinon, Jean

Martinon, Jean (1910–1976)

French conductor and composer. He studied violin at the Lyon Conservatory and composition under Roussel at the Paris Conservatory. He began to produce works shortly before World War II, during which he was imprisoned in Germany, where he wrote several more works. After the war he appeared with success as a conductor in Europe and the USA (Chicago Symphony Orchestra 1963–69) and was often heard in Roussel, Bartók, and Prokofiev.

Works

opera Hécube (libretto by S Moreaux after Euripides, 1949–54); Psalm 136 for solo voices, reciter, chorus and orchestra; Absolve Domine for men's chorus and orchestra; four symphonies (1936–65), Symphoniette.
