Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.83 sec.

Martins, Peter (1946– )

Danish-born US dancer, choreographer, and ballet director. He was principal dancer with the New York City Ballet (NYCB) from 1969, its joint ballet master (with Jerome Robbins) from 1983, and its director from 1990. He is especially noted for his partnership with Suzanne Farrell, with whom he danced Balanchine's Jewels (1967). He retired from performing in 1983, after partnering Farrell in The Nutcracker, to concentrate on choreography.

Born in Copenhagen, Martins trained at the Royal Danish Ballet School, joining the company in 1965. He created roles in, among others, Robbins' Goldberg Variations (1971) and Balanchine's Stravinsky Violin Concerto and Duo Concertante (both 1972), and has choreographed many ballets, for example, Calcium Night Light (1978).
