Martinsville

City and seat of Morgan County, central Indiana, on the White River, 45 km/28 mi southwest of Indianapolis; population (1990) 12,000.

Settled in the 1820s around artesian springs, Martinsville developed into a health spa with several sanitaria. Nowadays, industry is more important to the economy; manufactured goods from here include aircraft parts, furniture, and other wood products. The city is also an agricultural market centre, producing flour, feed, and other processed foodstuffs.

Martinsville

City in Henry County, southern Virginia; population (1990) 16,200. Although it is the county seat, the city is administratively separate from it. Martinsville is situated in the Piedmont, southeast of the Blue Ridge Mountains, on the Smith River, 51 km/32 mi west-northwest of Danville.

Martinsville is a commercial centre for a lumber-producing and agricultural region (where tobacco, corn, and wheat are grown). Among its manufactures are furniture, textiles, fibreboard, and timber. Patrick Henry Community College (founded 1962) is sited here.
