Martland, Steve (1958– )

English composer. His music eschews classical principles and aspires to ‘street cred’. Babi Yar for orchestra 1983, had a joint first performance with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the St Louis Symphony Orchestra.

He studied with Louis Andriessen at the Hague and with Gunther Schuller at Tanglewood in 1984.

Lotta continua for orchestra and jazz band (1981); Orc for horn and chamber orchestra (1984); Crossing the Border for strings (1991); Remembering Lennon for 7 players (1981); American Invention for 13 players (1985); Patrol for string quartet (1991); Terra Firma for 5 voices and video (1989); The Perfect Act for amplified ensemble and voice (1991); piano pieces and tape items.
