Marvin, Lee

Marvin, Lee (1924–1987)

US film actor. An accomplished performer, with a tough, violent screen persona, he worked with such film-makers as Fritz Lang, John Ford, Don Siegel, and John Boorman on The Big Heat (1953), The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962), The Killers (1964), and Point Blank (1967) respectively.

In the 1960s he also showed a flair for comic roles in Donovan's Reef (1963), Cat Ballou (1965) (Academy Award), and Paint Your Wagon (1969). His other films include the westerns The Professionals (1966) and Monte Walsh (1970), the war films The Dirty Dozen (1967) and The Big Red One (1980), the crime thrillers Prime Cut (1972) and Gorky Park (1983).

He enjoyed a successful stint on the TV show M Squad 1957–59.
