Marwitz, Georg von der

German general. He became a general of cavalry in 1908 and by 1912 was a divisional commander. In World War I he was active on the Eastern Front, first in the Carpathians and later led the attack on Przemysl in 1915. He commanded the German 2nd Army in France and defeated the British at Cambrai in November 1917. He later led the same army in the German Spring Offensive in 1918, and ended the war commanding the 5th Army in the Verdun sector.
