Marx, Karl (1897–1985)

German composer. He studied natural science at first, but met Carl Orff during World War I and later studied music with him. He was appointed professor of the Munich Academy in 1924 and was conductor of the Bach Society there in 1928. From 1939 to 1945 he taught at Graz Conservatory, becoming professor in 1944, and in 1946 he became professor at the Hochschule für Musik in Stuttgart. He was much occupied with school music.

Works

Orchestral

a passacaglia for orchestra (1932); concertos for piano, violin, two violins, viola, and flute.

Chamber

divertimento for wind instruments (1934), string quartet and other chamber music; various choral works and songs, some to words by Rilke.
