Livermore

City in north-central California, in the Livermore Valley, 40 km/25 mi southeast of Oakland; population (1990) 56,700. It has long been a noted wine producer, and is a processing and distribution centre for cattle and agricultural produce. The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (1952; formerly the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory), run by the University of California, is a leading nuclear physics and weapons research centre.

The city also has nurseries, extracts sand and gravel, and makes industrial glass.
