Maryville

City and seat of Nodaway County, northwestern Missouri; population (2000) 10,600. Maryville lies 64 km/40 mi north of St Joseph and 24 km/15 mi south of the Iowa border.

Maryville was settled in the mid-1840s. Goods now manufactured there include cement blocks and tools, and it is also a market and distribution centre for livestock, grain, and dairy products. The city is the site of Northwest Missouri State University (founded 1905).

Maryville

City and seat of Blount County, eastern Tennessee, 26 km/16 mi south of Knoxville; population (1990) 19,200.

Fort Craig was built at this location in 1785, and the settlement of Maryville grew up around it. From 1910 nearby dams supplied power to smelting and production plants built by the Aluminum Company of America. The city's economy, along with that of neighbouring Alcoa (population 6,400), is still largely based on this industry. Other manufactured goods are building materials, textiles, lumber, limestone, processed foods, and electronic components. Maryville College (founded 1819) is sited here, and the city is a gateway to Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
