Masaniello

Masaniello (c. 1623–1647)

Italian rebel leader. He led a revolt in 1647 against taxes on fruit and vegetables introduced in Naples, which led to the defeat of government forces. For a short time he was master of the city, but he became dictatorial and was assassinated by the Viceroy's agents.

He was born in Amalfi.
