Masaryk, Tomáš Garrigue (1850-1937)

Czechoslovak nationalist politician. He directed the revolutionary movement against the Austrian Empire, founding with Edvard Beneš and Milan Stefanik the Czechoslovak National Council. In 1918 he was elected first president of the newly formed Czechoslovak Republic. Three times re-elected, he resigned in 1935 in favour of Beneš.

After the communist coup in 1948, Masaryk was systematically removed from public memory in order to reverse his semi-mythological status as the forger of the Czechoslovak nation.
