Masaya

Town in western Nicaragua and administrative capital of the department of Masaya; population (1997) 80,100. Situated between lakes Managua and Nicaragua, it is on the road and railway connecting the cities of Managua and Granada. The department is the smallest and the most densely populated in Nicaragua. It is the commercial centre of a rich agricultural area producing cotton, coffee, and tobacco.

The town has several original pre-Hispanic markets: for example, Mercado Viejo and Centro de Artesanías. Rocking chairs in kit form are produced and packed for export by air. An annual fiesta is held in September.

Masaya is nicknamed ‘the city of flowers’, a term coined by the poet Rubén Darío who was impressed by the abundant flowers in the town's gardens.
