Masbate

Island province of the Philippines, off the southwest coast of Luzon Island; area 4,048 sq km/1,563 sq mi; population (2000) 707,700. The capital is Masbate. The province is hilly, but is 70% grasslands. Livestock is important, and sugar-cane, cotton, and hemp are grown. Gold and copper are mined, though output is small. There is a trade in copra, fish, and cattle at the port of Masbate.
