Mashhad

District and capital of the province of Khorasan, northeast Iran, and holy city of the Shiites; population (2006) 2,427,300. It is the second-largest city in Iran. It produces carpets, textiles, and leather goods. The magnificent mausoleum of the Imam Reza is visited annually by thousands of Shiite pilgrims.

A branch of the Trans-Iranian railway links Mashhad with Tehran.
