Mashonaland

Eastern Zimbabwe, the land of the Shona people, now divided into three provinces (Mashonaland East, Mashonaland Central, and Mashonaland West); population (1992) 4,489,700. Granted to the British South Africa Company in 1889, it was included in Southern Rhodesia in 1923. The Zimbabwe ruins are here.

The region was named Mashonaland after it came under British rule in 1890. The Shona people are the descendants of the inhabitants of the kingdom of Zimbabwe, ruled by the Monowatapa. They are generally divided into five groups, primarily on linguistic grounds: Zezuru, Karanga, Manyika, Tonga-Korekore, and Ndau.
