Mashpee

Town in Barnstable County, southeastern Massachusetts; population (1990 est) 7,900. Mashpee stands on Cape Cod, immediately southwest of Barnstable, and was incorporated in 1870. A popular summer resort, Mashpee was the fastest-growing town on the Cape in the 1980s. Otis Air Force Base is situated to the west. Cranberries are cultivated extensively in the surrounding region.

Mashpee is one of the remaining settlements of the Wampanoag American Indians, who still hold an annual powwow each July.
