Mason, Daniel Gregory

Mason, Daniel Gregory (1873–1953)

US composer. A well-known pedagogue, author of many books including Music in My Time (1938), he was conservative and European-oriented in his music and opinions; his work includes three symphonies and much chamber music. Mason was born in Brookline, Massachusetts. He studied at Harvard University and in Paris, France, before returning to the USA and joining the Columbia University faculty in 1910, where he remained until his 1942 retirement. His grandfather was fellow musician and educator Lowell Mason.
