indiumSoft, ductile, silver-white, metallic element, atomic number 49, relative atomic mass 114.82. It occurs in nature in some zinc ores, is resistant to abrasion, and is used as a coating on metal parts. It was discovered in 1863 by German metallurgists Ferdinand Reich (1799-1882) and Hieronymus Richter (1824-1898), who named it after the two indigo lines of its spectrum. |
