Massa

Capital of Massa-Carrara province in Tuscany region, north-central Italy, 90 km/56 mi northwest of Florence, in the foothills of the Apennines; population (1991) 66,700. Massa is a centre of the Carrara marble industry. Recently developed industries include engineering, chemicals, foodstuffs, and building materials. Its port is 5 km/3 mi to the southwest, on the Ligurian Sea, and is a holiday resort.

There is a 16th-century cathedral and a 16th–17th-century ducal palace of the ruling Cybo Malaspina family. The town was annexed to the kingdom of Sardinia in 1859.

The sculptor Felice Palma (1583–1625) and the musician and composer Pietro Alessandro Guglielmi (1728–1804) were born here.
