Massacre at Khíos, The

Painting by the French Romantic artist Eugèe Delacroix 1824. The scene shows Greek families ‘awaiting death or slavery’ at the hands of Turks in 1822 during the Greek War of Independence. A mounted Turkish officer is dominant in the composition. It is one of his finest works and one of the major products of French Romanticism.

Delacroix is said to have repainted some of the picture after seeing the English landscape painter John Constable's Haywain, also exhibited at the Salon of 1824.
