Massasoit

Massasoit (c. 1590–1661)

American Indian chief of the Wampanoag, a people inhabiting the coasts of Massachusetts Bay and Cape Cod. He formed alliances with Plymouth Colony 1621 and Massachusetts Bay Colony 1638. After his death, his son Metacomet, known to the English as ‘King Philip’, took over his father's leadership.

Massasoit was born in the area of modern Bristol, Rhode Island.
