Massey, Vincent

Massey, (Charles) Vincent (1887–1967)

Canadian Liberal Party politician. He was the first Canadian to become governor general of Canada 1952–59.

He helped to establish the Massey Foundation in 1918, which funded the building of Massey College and the University of Toronto.

Massey was educated at Toronto University, and Balliol College, Oxford. He was a lecturer in modern history at Toronto University 1913–15, and was appointed minister without portfolio in the Dominion cabinet after World War I. He was honorary Canadian minister to the USA 1926–30, president of the National Liberal Federation of Canada 1932–53, and high commissioner for Canada in the UK 1935–46. In his last year of office he was made a Companion of Honour. From 1947 to 1950 he was chancellor of the University of Toronto.
