Massif Central

Upland region of south-central France with mountains and plateaux; area 93,000 sq km/36,000 sq mi, highest peak Puy de Sancy, 1,886 m/6,188 ft. It is a source of hydroelectricity. Although the Massif Central covers about one-seventh of France, it is home to only one-fifth of the population. Manufacturing is limited to the cities, such as Clermont-Ferrand and Limoges. Tourism, focused in the area's many health resorts, of which Vichy is the best known, is an important industry.
