Masson, André Aimé René

    0.03 sec.

Masson, André Aimé René (1896-1987)

French artist and writer. He was a leader of the surrealist movement until 1929 when he quarrelled with André Breton. His interest in the unconscious mind led him to experiment with automatic drawing - simple pen-and-ink work - and later textured accretions of pigment, glue, and sand.

During World War II he moved to the USA, his automatic drawings having a marked influence on the US artist Arshile Gorky. He later returned to France and painted landscapes.
