Masvingo

Town in Zimbabwe, 303 km/188 mi south of Harare; population (2002 est) 70,000. It is a commercial centre for cattle ranching and agricultural produce, including grain, cotton, tobacco, and sugar; gold and asbestos are mined nearby. Tourism has grown recently, as the Great Zimbabwe ruins are 27 km/17 mi southeast of the town, and Kyle, Mushandike, and Manjirenji national parks are nearby.

Masvingo was established by the ‘Pioneer Column’, a group of settlers lead by Cecil Rhodes, which reached Mashonaland in 1890.

The town lies on the road between Harare and Pretoria and is the terminus of a railway from Bulawayo.
