Mata, Eduardo (1942-1995)

Mexican conductor and composer. He studied composition with Rodolfo Halffter (1954-60) and Carlos Chavez (1960-65) and subsequently conducting with Erich Leinsdorf and Gunther Schuller. He conducted the Guadalajara Symphony Orchestra 1964-66, the Philharmonic Orchestra of the National University of Mexico, 1966-76 and was principal conductor of the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra 1972-78 and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra 1977-93. He has guested in London and elsewhere in Europe and in the USA. His compositions include three symphonies (1962, 1963, 1967). He recorded the complete works for orchestra of Revueltas, with the Philharmonia, and music by Falla with the London Symphony Orchestra. He died while piloting his light aircraft.
