Matačič, Lovro von (1899–1985)

Yugoslav conductor, producer, and composer. As a boy he sang with the Wiener Sängerknaben (Vienna Boys' Choir), later studying organ and piano with Albert Dietrich, theory with Walker, and composition and conducting with Herbst and Oskar Nebdal. He made his conducting debut in Cologne in 1919 and after appointments in Ljubljana and Zagreb became director of the Belgrade Opera in 1938. From 1956 to 1958 he was music director of the Dresden Opera and in 1961 succeeded Solti at Frankfurt, where he worked until 1966. From 1974 he worked in Monte Carlo. He also wrote a quantity of orchestral and incidental music.
