Mather, Frank Jewett, Jr (1868–1953)

US art historian and museum director. Considered the foremost American art critic of his day, he published on a variety of subjects, from History of Italian Painting (1923) to Modern Painting (1927). He taught at Princeton University (1910–33), and became the director of the Museum of Historic Art (now Princeton University Art Museum), a repository of his collection (1922–46).

Mathers was born in Deep River, Connecticut. He studied at Williams College and Johns Hopkins University, gaining his PhD in 1892. He then continued his studies in Paris, France (1897–98). He taught at Williams College (1893–1900), then became a journalist in New York City (1901–06) and Italy (1906–10).
