Mathis, Edith (1938– )

Swiss soprano. After her debut in Lucerne in 1959 she sang at Cologne until 1963 and thereafter at the, Deutsche Oper, Berlin. She has been heard at Salzburg as Nannetta and Sophie and at Glyndebourne, 1962–63, as Cherubino. She made her house debuts in 1970 (at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York, as Pamina and at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, as Susanna) and in 1990 (at Bern, as the Marschallin). She took part in the first performance of Henze's Der junge Lord in Berlin in 1965.
