Mathura

Town in Uttar Pradesh state, northern India, situated on the west bank of the Yamuna River, 48 km/30 mi northwest of Agra; population (1991) 233,200. It is one of the seven sacred Hindu cities, revered as the birthplace of Krishna. Today, Mathura is important as an industrial centre; in 1975, an oil refinery was opened nearby, causing controversy with environmentalists.

Mathura was an important centre for Indian art between the 3rd century BC and the 6th century AD, and a major Jain and Buddhist centre, with several monasteries, early in the Christian era. It has a mosque built by the Mogul emperor Aurangzeb.
