Matinicus Island

Island in the Atlantic Ocean off the northeastern coast of the USA; population (1990) 100. It lies 32 km/20 mi southeast of Rockland, and is administratively part of Knox County, in south-central Maine.

Covering an area of 2.6 sq km/1 sq mi, Matinicus is the largest of the islands that comprise Matinicus Isle Plantation. This extensive coastal area is made up of largely unspoiled shoreline, and is a well-known breeding site for seabirds. Fishing and lobster catching are the chief occupations.
