Matsudo

City in Chiba prefecture, Japan, 18 km/11 mi east of Tokyo, from which it is separated by the Edo River; population (1998 est) 456,300. The city is an industrial and residential suburb of Tokyo, with commuters travelling by the Joban railway. Industries include iron manufacture and engineering.

Matsudo flourished as a river port from the Tokugawa period (1603–1867). It also grew in importance between the 17th and 19th centuries because of its position on the Mito highway.
