Matsuyama

Capital and largest city of Ehime prefecture, Shikoku island, Japan, facing the Inland Sea; population (2005) 514,700. Industries include agricultural machinery, textiles, and petrochemicals. Traditional cotton cloth is also produced locally.

The city, which was the setting for the novel Botchan (1906) by Natsume Sōseki, Japan's first great modern novelist, also claims to be the home of haiku poetry. There is a museum honouring the 19th-century poet Shiki Masaoka.

The Dogo hot spring attracts visitors to its public bath house, built in 1894. The castle (1603) has been restored or rebuilt five times, most recently in 1986. The city is home to the Matsuyama University of Commerce (1925).
