Matthew, St (lived 1st century AD)

St Matthew, depicted in the Book of Kells. St Matthew is traditionally attributed with authorship of the First Gospel of the New Testament of the Bible. The Book of Kells is an 8th or 9th century illuminated gospel book, and is kept in Trinity College Library, Dublin.

Christian apostle and evangelist, the traditional author of the first listed Gospel of the New Testament. He is usually identified with Levi, who was a tax collector in the service of Herod Antipas, and was called by Jesus to be a disciple as he sat by the Lake of Galilee receiving custom dues. His emblem is a man with wings. His feast day is 21 September.
